Recruitment and Hiring
As we didn't have time to get to these questions at yesterday's (1/10) meeting, please share what you can on the following questions:
1. What are you currently doing for recruitment that has been successful?
2. What does your interview process look like? What about your promotional process?
3. Are there any questions you use for interviewing that you find to be successful?

City of Pleasanton has been reimbursing lifeguards/swim instructors for the cost of their course once they have been successfully hired on. We have also been working to get our wages to stay above minimum wage. Our Lifeguard I's start at $16.55. We recently got a Lifeguard II position for lifeguards that are 18+ years old, out of high school and available to work high school hours. This position starts at $21.12.
We invite the interested party out for an interview, or pre-course + interview if they are not already certified. If they do not pass the pre-course, then they do not get an interview. Should we feel they are someone we want to hire, we offer them the job on the spot and hand them our hiring packet. We also will schedule a fingerprinting appointment with them and get them a WhentoWork account so they can start inputting time off. For promotions, Lifeguard > LG/WSI just needs to take and pass the WSI course. Senior Guards we assess over the summer and with input from our managers, ask them if they want to be one. Assistant pool managers must apply for the position and interview. We then assess their strengths, current certifications, as well as our current facility needs.
Our questions tend to be general for our lifeguard interviews because we do not require them to initially be certified to applied. How do your past teachers/managers describe you? How do you handle multiple deadlines? We ask our potential managers more in depth questions such as how they would handle a parent who is upset their child is not progressing in a swim lesson class; how they would handle a guard being late while there is a line at the window, phones ringing and programs starting; and what they would do when the emergency action plan is activated.
