American Red Cross Update
Lia Brewer reported that ARC will is now offering a "Wilderness and Remote First Aid" program.  Instructor coursed are available.  For more information contact Instructor Support at (415) 427-8091.  ARC will be present at the April Pools Day event will be held in Antioch on April 1st.  ARC is offering a Water Safety Instructor Re-Entry Course on March 27 & 28, 9:00am - 4:30pm (both days) at Hervst Pool in San Francisco.  For more information email Lia Brewer or call her at (415) 427-8079, to register call (800) 520-5433.

BAPPOMA Update

Next BAPPOMA meeting April 20th in Fairfield.  The attendees have been adapting a "flea market" idea where agencies can bring any unused equipment to exchange with others.  May be discussing chemical handling at their next meeting.

CPRS District II & NCAMA Report
T.O.T.A.L. Guard Training will be held in Elk Grove on March 27th. Email Beth Gegogeine or Katie Houser for more information.

CPRS District III
Awards Banquet will be held on March 25th.

CPRS District IV Report
T.O.T.A.L. Guard Training will be held in Burlingame on May 22nd. Gold tournament will take place on May 7th at Santa Clara Gold and Tennis Club.  Please call Lauren Merriman at (650) 903-6618 for more information.

2010 BAPPOA Student Scholarship
Applications are now being accepted and are due April 23, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.  Click here for more information and to view the application.

CAMS
CAMS 2010 will be held October 6-13 at UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center.  More information will be available in March on the CPRS Aquatics website.  Register earley, this conference sold out last year!  For questions, email Jenni Worsham or Heather Woodland.

American Red Cross Report
The American Red Cross Reported -
- The IT Institute was held in the beginning of November at Mills College.  Thank you to all the IT's who assisted.  Please let Carol Berendsen know if you are a currently authorized IT and are willing to mentor an IT candidate in Water Safety or Lifeguard Training. 
- A reminder that all WSI's need to update to the new program AND submit their verification form by December 31, 2009.  Submitting a course record for the old WSI program will NOT keep instructors authorized past December 31, 2009.  
- Please make sure you submit course records on the appropriate Activity Report.
- Darcy is working to offer the Aquatic Examiner Service in the Bay Area Chapter.  The pilot program will be free, but there will eventually be a fee associated with this very customizable program.
 - The Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR and Emergency Response courses will start going through updates within the next year.
 - The Red Cross is looking for part time instructors to teach Health and Safety classes.  The minimum committment is to teach 4 classes a month.

Ellis Report
- The International Safety School is coming up.
- Instructor Training will be held at Brentwood.
- Ellis is changing the way fees are charged for clients - either on a per license basis or agencies will be able to issue as many licenses as they need.

BAPPOA Elections
The 2010 Board of Directors was announced.  New Board Members are:
Vice President - Karen Martin (Walnut Creek)
Treasurer - Cody George (Oakland)
Members at Large - Jill Wynn (Benicia) and Carol Berendsen (Mills College)

The following individuals were appointed by the Board of Directors to fill vacancies on the Board:
Secretary - Alejandra Hernandez (Mountain View)
Member at Large - Vicki Russo (Pacifica)
These appointments are for the remainder of the original term (one more year).

BAPPOMA Update
The October BAPPOMA meeting was held in Pleasant Hill.  The City of Fairfield presented pictures of their water park that is under construction and slated for opening in early 2010.  They are hoping to host a BAPPOMA meeting after they open so all can enjoy a tour of the new facility.
The meeting also covered discussion of budget savings ideas (successful and unsuccessful) as well as the recently passed AB1020, California's version of the federal VGB Act, which requires an engineer to sign off on work performed to bring facilities into compliance.

CPRS Aquatics
- Nominations for open Aquatics Section positions will be comng out soon.  Contact Keith Haase for more information if you are interested in running for a CPRS Aquatics Board position.
- CAMS 2009 was very successful with just over 60 people in attendance.  CAMS 2010 will be held Oct 6-8 in Lake Arrowhead.  Registration will be limited to approximately 75 people, so get your registration in as soon as possible! (Note: CAMS 2010 registration information will be posted on this website under Trainings & Conferences as soon as it is available.)
- CPRS has revised its by-laws and all sections and districts will be updating their by-laws as well. 
- CPRS Conference will be March 9-12, 2010 in Palm Springs.  The Aquatics Intensive will be on Friday and topics will include budgeting, pump room effectiveness, and concessions for your aquatics facility.

District II/NCAMA
NCAMA announced they will be holding a workshop in January.  Visit the Trainings & Conferences page for more information and to download the registration brochure.

Drowning is Preventable (DIP)
Members of the DIP Committee will be presenting a session at the annual CPRS Conference in March 2010.

American Red Cross Report
The American Red Cross Reported -
- Thank you to the Authorized Providers who have submitted their Learn-to-Swim and other aquatics numbers.  Because of this, the Bay Area Chapter is now the second largest aquatics provider in the nation!
- A reminder that all WSI's need to update to the new program AND submit their verification form by December 31, 2009.  Submitting a course record for the old WSI program will NOT keep instructors authorized past December 31, 2009.  If you are an authorized provider and would like to see if your WSI's have completed the update process, please e-mail Shannon Barnett.
- The next IT Institute will be held November 6-8, 2009.  This will include land and water IT candidates.  There will be an opportunity during the Institute for current IT's to get together to meet, network and share information.

Summer Wrap Up
Discussion was held related to summer 2009 programs - successful new programs and some incredible stories, like having to rescue a live deer that somehow managed to get into Lake Merritt.

BAPPOA Nominations and Elections
Nominations for the BAPPOA Board of Directors were discussed.  All those who were nominated will be contacted to provide a brief bio for the ballot.  Only those who have paid their membership dues are eligible to vote in the Board of Directors election.

Oxygen Administration
Pete DeQuincy from East Bay Regional Park District went over a presentation on the benefits of having emergency oxygen at your facility.  Click here to view the presentation.  Thank you to Pete for presenting the information, as well as to Dan McCormick, from the East Bay Regional Park District, who put together the presentation!

BAPPOA Awards
A flyer for the BAPPOA Professional Awards was distributed.  The awards luncheon will be held on November 17, 2009, after the regular BAPPOA meeting, at the Pleasant Hill Community Center (320 Civic Drive, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523).  The cost is $15 for BAPPOA members, and $25 for non-members.  RSVPs are due by October 30th. 
Information on the award categories and nominations will be distributed via e-mail.

BAPPOMA
The next BAPPOMA meeting will be October 20th in Pleasant Hill.  A call for agenda items will go out shortly.  For more information on BAPPOMA, please e-mail Peter Beireis.

CPRS Aquatics
Elections are coming up for the CPRS Aquatics Board.  Contact Keith Haase for more information if you are interested in running for a CPRS Aquatics Board position.
Information was posted on the new CPRS website about AB 1020, which has passed on to the Governors office.  You must be a CPRS member in order to access portions of the new CPRS website.

Members of the DIP Committee will be presenting a session at NRPA Congress in Salt Lake City on the DIP Campaign.

Impact Training
Pete DeQuincy from East Bay Regional Park District and Nicole Roa from City of San Leandro gave a presentation titled "Impact Training - Layers of Protection".  Click here to view the presentation.  Thank you Pete and Nicole for a great presentation!

Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard Games
Packets for Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard Games were distributed.  They are also available for download from the website.
Junior Lifeguard Games will be held Friday, July 31 in Pleasanton at the Dolores Bengston Aquatic Center.
Lifeguard Games will be held Sunday, August 2 in San Ramon at the Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center.  Dan McCormick announced there will be a new process for tie-breakers in the CPR event.  Since one of the objectives of Lifeguard Games is to encourage our lifeguards to practice their skills, the CPR tie-breaker will be a to-be-announced CPR skill.

- For Instructor Level courses, please send student e-mails in with your course record sheet. 
- The FIT Course is going to be revised soon.  If you have comments or suggestions for the new FIT Course, please e-mail Carol Berendsen
- Please keep sending in your water safety program course numbers!  This includes learn-to-swim lessons and any water safety presentations.

May is National Water Safety Month!
There was discussion about what agencies are doing to promote water safety during National Water Safety Month.  Some facilities are holding special events, and many are distributing water safety information through handouts and presentations.

CAMS
CAMS 2009 will be held October 13-16 at Asilomar Conference Center.  Registration is now open!
Bruce Wigo from the International Swimming Hall of Fame was just confirmed as the Keynote Speaker for CAMS.

2009 California Rescue Report Survey
As the summer season approaches, don't forget to track your rescues so you can submit data for the 2009 California Rescue Report.  The 2009 Report will cover the period of October 2008 through September 2009.  If you do not have a form for tracking rescues, you can use the Sample Rescue Report (the form has been updated for 2009).  

All those who participate in the survey will receive a copy of the compiled information. This information can be used to train and prepare our staffs as to what to expect while working for agencies throughout California.

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross Reported -
 - The new Swimming and Water Safety Program was released in late February.  New marketing materials are available to authorized providers for free, except for shipping costs (which can be avoided by picking up at a chapter office).    
 - Update information is available on the Instructor's Corner.  All instructors and instructor trainers need to update to the new program by December 31, 2009.
 - Instructor certificates will no longer be mailed to instructors (there is no change to participant level certificates).  Instructors now need to log-on to the Learning Management System with their Instructor ID and can then print a transcript of their instructor authorizations.  If you do not know your Instructor ID, you should e-mail instructorsupport@usa.redcross.org with your full name in order to get your Instructor ID.  The March 2009 Health and Safety News, e-mailed the week of March 16th, contains detailed instructions for accessing instructor authorization transcripts.  If instructors need an actual certificate, they should contact their local chapter.  The cost for instructor certificates is $10.

Swimming Lesson/Budget Survival
The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine recently published an article titled "Swimming lessons associated with reduced risk of drowning in toddlers".  The article is available at their website, here.  What a great resource when trying to preserve funding for your swim lesson program in these tough financial times!  Thank you to Rebecca Toussaint for bringing the article to the group!

Transforming Staff - Training First Time Program Managers
Beth Gegogeine of the Consumnes Community Services District and Beth McKinnie of the City of Sacramento made a presentation to the group about a Management School that has been implemented successfully in the City of Sacramento for several years.  Now a Management Academy, the training is 6.5 days long and provides specialized training specific to those who will supervise others.

CPRS Aquatics  - is in the process of updating it's By-Laws and Policies/Procedures.

CPRS District II/NCAMA - will be providing up to six scholarships to CAMS in October 2009 to help their members attend the school.

BAPPOA By-Laws
After a power point discussion of the proposed BAPPOA By-Laws, those present at the meeting voted and adpoted the By-Laws as presented.

American Red Cross Report
The American Red Cross reported the following:
 - Volunteer Instructors are needed for CPR Saturday on 3/14.  Please contact Darcy Mironov if you are able to help the Red Cross train approximately 2000 people on CPR Saturday.
 - The Bay Area Chapter is hosting an instructor workshop and potluck on 2/22 at the Oakland office.  For more information, contact Serena Jolley at (510) 595-4416.
 - The Bay Area Chapter is encouraging electronic submission of Course Record Sheets.  Certification fees can be paid with an open Purchase Order or credit card if Course Record Sheets are submitted electronically.  When Course Records are sent electronically, you will receive e-mail confirmation that your paperwork was received.  Course Records should be sent to Shannon Barnett.
 - Starting in February, all instructor level re-authorizations will come directly from National Headquarters.  In order to 'go green', paper certificates for instructors will not be printed automatically.  Please contact Darcy Mironov if you need proof of your certifications before National implements this change or if you have any questions about the change.
 - The new WSI program is still expected to release on 2/27.  The Bay Area Chapter will be setting up group updates.  Instructors will also have the option to self-study to complete the update.  All Instructors and Instructor Trainers for Water Safety will be required to upated by the end of 2009.

BAPPOA Organizational Plan

American Red Cross Update
There were several items of interest brought up by the American Red Cross.

There will be a free Webcast on the new Swimming and Water Safety Program on Wednesday, November 19 at 11:00 PT.  Register for the webcast here.

Information was distributed regarding how CEU's can be obtained after successful completion of a Red Cross Course.  More information is available on the Instructor's Corner.

Information was distributed and there was discussion regarding a change in the certificate validity period for the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Program.  More information is available on the Instructor's Corner.

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act
NRPA and CPRS recently sent an e-mail asking all members and pool operators to contact your Representatives and Senators in Congress to express your concerns regarding compliance with VGB.  Find additional information on NRPA's website here.

Please phone and write so your elected representatives know how the December 19, 2008 deadline is affecting your facilities!  A sample letter is provided here.  Let them know how many people would be impacted if your facility had to close due to a lack of compliant products on the market.

CPRS Aquatic Section Nominations
CPRS Aquatics is currently accepting nominations for the Aquatic Section Board for the 2009-2010 year.

There are a number of positions available for those looking to be part of the dynamic Aquatic Section.  It is my hope that you will consider being part of the board or help spread the word about these vacancies and or help the Section find Aquatic Professionals that are willing to be nominated for each vacant position.  The available positions for this next year include: President-elect (a three year progressive term), Treasurer, Secretary, and 5 region representatives.  Click here for the descriptions of the open positions.

2008 California Rescue Data Survey
Dear Pool Operator Groups -

Hope everyone had a great and exciting summer. As things begin to wind down I am looking for your support in encouraging members of your pool operator groups as well as all of your surrounding communities / cities to participate in the 2008 California Rescue Report Survey.  The process is relatively easy and with your help we will meet our goal of collecting information from over 100 California agencies this year. Please be a part of the process.
 

Please fill out the information on the attached 2008 – Rescue Report Survey regarding all water-related rescues for the period of October 2007 – September 2008.
 

If you did not track all of the information, leave it blank, and please consider collecting the data for future annual surveys.

2008 Aquatics IT Institute - October 31-November 2, 2008
The Aquatics Institute will help facilitate the necessary training to become an American Red Cross Aquatics Instructor Trainer.  The Institute is also for:
• Currently Authorized ITs to network and assist with the process of training IT Candidates.  FREE!!  Lunches included!
• Currently authorized IT's wishing to add an additional IT Certification (ex., WSIT wishing to become LGIT). $100
• IT Candidates who have partially completed the IT process but need to work on their plan.  FREE for ARCBA candidates-in-   process; $100 for non-ARCBA candidates needing IT Candidate Seminar and/or precourse.
